2023/24 Season

Spring term - 2024

During this term, we will be working on Carl Orff's famous Cantata, "Carmina Burana", one of the most popular pieces of music of all time.

Carmina Burana was composed between 1935 and 1936 by Carl Orff, based on 24 poems from the medieval collection "Carmina Burana". Its full Latin title is Carmina Burana: Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis atque imaginibus magicis

("Songs of Beuern: Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments and magical images")

Pronunciation of the words in this work can be challenging!

"Carmina Burana" uses text in two languages:

• Medieval Latin - scholastic and poetic, not Italianate, more Germanic

• Middle High German - similar to modern High German, with some notable differences
